Volvo Trucks launches world-first stop/start engine to cut fuel use and emissions

Volvo Trucks has introduced a new generation of its I-Roll technology with an engine stop/start functionality, a first for the heavy-duty truck industry. The innovation is designed to lower fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions, aligning with the company’s wider decarbonisation strategy.

The system works by monitoring road and curvature data in real time. When an upcoming downhill slope is detected, the engine temporarily switches off, eliminating fuel use and tailpipe emissions during that phase. The feature activates at speeds above 60 km/h and, depending on conditions such as topography and ambient temperature, can deliver up to one percent additional savings in fuel and emissions.

Extending efficiency gains

The new stop/start technology builds on Volvo’s existing I-See and I-Roll systems. It follows the company’s recent win in the 2025 Green Truck Award test with the Volvo FH Aero, where aerodynamic advances have contributed to measurable improvements in fuel efficiency.

Jan Hjelmgren, head of product management, Volvo Trucks: “Our engineers have done it again – innovating a new engine technology that contributes to making transport by truck more fuel-efficient. As part of our decarbonisation strategy, we will continue to innovate to make our combustion engines even better and to reduce our impact on the environment.”

Availability and decarbonisation strategy

The new feature will be available from September 2025 on the Volvo FH and FH Aero models equipped with 13-litre diesel engines.

Volvo’s broader decarbonisation roadmap includes multiple powertrain options: combustion engines compatible with renewable fuels, alongside battery-electric and fuel-cell electric trucks.
