Sony sets green management 2030 targets
Sony Group Corporation has introduced its Green Management 2030 plan, outlining medium-term environmental goals for fiscal years 2026 to 2030. The program is part of Sony’s broader Road to Zero initiative, which aims to achieve a zero environmental footprint by 2050 across its product lifecycles and business operations.
The new plan builds on Green Management 2025, which is nearing completion. For GM2030, Sony has revised its key performance indicators to reflect both progress to date and emerging environmental challenges. These include a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the value chain and accelerate circular resource use.
Reducing emissions across operations and supply chain
Sony aims to cut total greenhouse gas emissions across Scopes 1 to 3 by more than 25 percent by 2030, compared with 2025 levels. This includes reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 60 percent and offsetting remaining emissions, as well as lowering Scope 3 emissions by 25 percent. The company also plans to use 100 percent renewable electricity across its global operations and encourage key suppliers to do the same.
Sony has joined the RE100 international initiative and is working to meet its 2030 renewable energy commitment. Its net zero targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative.
Expanding use of circular and recycled materials
As part of its resource strategy, Sony plans to lower the use of non-circular plastics to 30 percent or less per product weight and expand the use of recycled materials. Specific goals include using 100 percent recycled tin in solder for major printed circuit boards and 100 percent recycled gold in select models. The company is also promoting longer product lifespans and component reuse.
Sony is stepping up efforts to address plastic packaging, aiming to reduce the plastic content in product packaging to 10 percent or less. Plastic packaging will be eliminated for products weighing five kilograms or less, as well as at Sony retail stores.
Driving environmental awareness
Alongside operational measures, Sony is using its entertainment content, intellectual property, and collaborations with artists to raise awareness of environmental issues. Under GM2030, each business unit will also conduct initiatives tailored to its activities.
Sony will continue to disclose progress in line with frameworks such as the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures and aims to strengthen its contribution to a sustainable society while moving toward its 2050 target of zero environmental impact.
