Mediahuis sustainability objectives validated by SBTi

Mediahuis has announced that its sustainability goals have been officially validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

This milestone confirms the company’s commitment and ambition to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and contribute to global efforts to tackle climate change.

European media group Mediahuis aims to minimize the impact of its activities on the climate and previously committed to setting scientifically based targets via the SBTi to reduce its GHG emissions. All targets set by Mediahuis were assessed using quantitative and qualitative criteria of the SBTi, together with the Criteria Assessment Indicators. The SBTi has now approved Mediahuis’ short-term and long-term targets for emission reduction.

An overview of Mediahuis' validated objectives:

Short-term goals (2030)

Mediahuis commits to reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 49.8% by 2030, compared to the reference year 2019.

Mediahuis commits to reducing absolute scope 3 GHG emissions by 27.5% within the same timeframe.

Mediahuis commits that 66% of its suppliers, based on upstream transport and distribution emissions, will have science-based targets by 2028.

Long-term goals (2050)

Mediahuis commits to reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% by 2050, compared to the reference year 2019.

Mediahuis commits to reducing scope 3 emissions by 90% by 2050, compared to the reference year 2019.

Overall net zero target (2050)

Mediahuis is committed to reducing net greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain to zero by 2050.

Gert Ysebaert, CEO, Mediahuis Group: “Mediahuis not only informs about society, but as a company it is also part of it. In this role, Mediahuis wants to make a positive contribution and take its responsibility. Defining scientifically substantiated climate objectives makes the efforts we have to make very concrete and enables us to communicate our progress to our stakeholders in a transparent way. The validation of our sustainability goals by the SBTi underlines that we are on the right track towards a more climate-friendly future.”

Caroline Swanenberg, Head of Sustainability, Mediahuis Group: “As part of a transparent and responsible sustainability policy, Mediahuis has been working for years to minimize its impact on the climate. Simply put, we do everything we can to contribute as much as possible to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, this path is not easy. Reaching this milestone is therefore a great confirmation for everyone within the company; together we will achieve our goals. The validation by the SBTi gives us the confidence that we will achieve our short- and long-term climate goals.”

Mediahuis' Green Transition

The digital transformation is causing the share of printed newspapers to decline year after year. Nevertheless, Mediahuis' major green challenges lie in the areas of printing, distribution and the choice of paper and ink.

Together, these three factors account for the vast majority of the company's total CO2 emissions, including gas and electricity consumption for heating buildings, e-commerce and emissions from distribution.

Mediahuis currently operates as efficiently and sustainably as possible by placing its titles with its own printers as smartly as possible, optimising delivery routes and making sustainable choices when purchasing paper and ink.

The company invests in solar panels and heat pumps and is increasingly switching to green energy. In addition, Mediahuis aims to switch completely to electric vans for the distribution of its newspapers in the future. In the Netherlands, 30% of the delivery staff already uses e-bikes.

Mediahuis IMPACT sustainability policy

Mediahuis believes unconditionally in independent journalism and strong, relevant media that make a positive contribution to people and society. In line with our mission, the Mediahuis IMPACT sustainability policy is based on three pillars: journalism that matters, room for talent and the green transition.
