5W AI ranks leading AI founders

The inaugural report ranks Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

5W AI Communications has published the first edition of The 5W Reputation Index, introducing a benchmark that measures how AI systems retrieve and present the reputations of leading figures in the artificial intelligence sector.

The inaugural report ranks Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

The report, produced by the agency's AI Lab, assigns Demis Hassabis a score of 86, Dario Amodei 82 and Sam Altman 64, highlighting a 22-point gap between the three executives despite their prominent roles in the AI industry.

Credentials influence AI retrieval

According to the report, Demis Hassabis' profile benefits from a series of well-established achievements, including founding DeepMind in 2010, leading the development of AlphaGo and AlphaFold, and receiving the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The index argues that these credentials create a consistent and stable profile across AI systems.

Dario Amodei ranks second with a score of 82. The report attributes this to his academic background, previous role as OpenAI's vice president of research, the founding of Anthropic in 2021, and the company's focus on AI safety through initiatives such as its Responsible Scaling Policy.

Company and founder reputations differ

Sam Altman receives a score of 64 despite OpenAI leading the accompanying AI Companies AI Visibility Index 2026 with a 24.6 per cent citation share. The report suggests this illustrates that company reputation and founder reputation can develop independently.

The report also states that historical events continue to influence AI retrieval. It argues that coverage of Sam Altman's temporary removal and reinstatement as OpenAI CEO in November 2023 remains a prominent reference point in trust-related prompts, alongside discussion of Worldcoin and OpenAI's corporate structure.

Reputation management remains a long-term process

The index concludes that academic credentials and recognised achievements strengthen reputation signals within AI systems, while high-profile governance controversies can remain influential long after the events themselves. It argues that organisations should distinguish between managing corporate reputation and founder reputation, as the two may evolve differently over time.

Ronn Torossian, founder and chairman, 5W AI Communications: "AI Communications is a mix of journalism, psychology, and engineering. Three founders building the AI industry are separated by 22 points inside the engines that industry built. Credentials and a controlled source base beat fame. That is the whole franchise finding — delivered in Edition 01."
